L&D Professionals Play Vital Role in Organization Development

(Alexandria, VA) September 19, 2023—The Association for Talent Development (ATD) announces the publication of ATD’s Organization Development Handbook, the first resource to address the intersection of the learning and development (L&D) field with organization development (OD).

Organizations are increasingly asking L&D professionals to take on OD initiatives, for many reasons. Challenging economic times as well as times marked with disruption and change often result in organizations looking for ways to maximize the contributions and engagement of employees, streamline processes, improve efficiencies and effectiveness, and attract and retain talent. This is where the goals of both OD and TD professionals often align naturally and why it is critical that learning professionals understand the impact of their work through an OD lens.

Edited by L&D and OD authority Brian J. Flores, this volume brings together in-house experts and consultant contributors from the OD field, including those who crossed over from L&D to OD. It provides the foundation that every L&D professional should have in OD. Readers will learn how to apply organization development principles to their multiculturalism, upskilling and reskilling, soft skill development, and succession planning processes and programs.

L&D professionals can play a vital role in building organizational agility. When they understand what technical and workplace transformations the organization may have to undergo to keep pace with the competition, L&D professionals can ensure that members of the organization—including themselves—are ready to adapt, reskill, and assume new roles. L&D teams can enable their organizations to respond well to disruptions by managing change, leading skilling initiatives, and encouraging employees to adopt a growth mindset. They will not only better support OD colleagues and initiatives but can also directly improve their learning programs and initiatives with sound OD knowledge.
