Polywork

Monday, July 31, 2023

Overemployed is a popular subreddit with 179,000 members, where people share techniques and hacks for how to juggle multiple jobs simultaneously. Due to the shift to hybrid and remote work, performing more than one job is not uncommon: A 2022 ResumeBuilder.com survey found that 79 percent of full-time remote or hybrid workers have multiple jobs, a 10 percent increase from the same survey in 2021. It's a concept called polywork.

Similar to other postpandemic job trends, polywork revolves around flexibility for employees. Ninety-two percent of polyworkers surveyed by Paychex, a human-capital services company, are freelancers because remote work offers them the flexibility to work more than one job.

Polyworking skews younger, with Gen Zers (respondents up to 26 years old) more likely to hold more than one job than other age groups. Paychex's poll shows that more than half of Gen Z workers were employed at two or three companies.

While polywork typically means a higher income, it also has its pitfalls. ResumeBuilder.com's survey reveals that 37 percent of respondents working more than one job work more than 40 hours a week, while 10 percent work more than 60 hours in addition to time spent at their full-time jobs.
