You know when someone is addicted to learning and their only hobby is challenging themselves with certification exams? Well, that’s me. Having earned both ATD certifications, the Associate Professional in Talent Development (APTD®) and Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD®), I’ve been on quite the journey. Let me take you through my experiences and how these certifications have shaped not only my career advancement but also my professional approach to learning and development.

In 2020, I made a deliberate decision to advance my career by pursuing the APTD certification. Recognizing its pivotal role in my professional journey, I kicked off the process with a thorough self-assessment and gap analysis. This involved closely examining my skills and experiences to pinpoint areas for enhancement. Guiding me through this introspective journey was the Talent Development Capability Model™, a comprehensive framework for continuous improvement and lifelong learning. Aligning my development goals with the competencies outlined in the model, I tailored my preparation to focus on specific areas needing growth. It was a journey of self-discovery and skill-building, each step shaping my path toward certification.

Fast forward to 2021, and guess what? I nailed it! I earned that APTD certification, and it felt like a major win. It wasn’t just about the certification; it was about proving to myself and the world that I was serious about talent development, showcasing my dedication and expertise in the field.

Then, in 2023, something exciting happened. I landed an incredible opportunity in the UAE. Now, here’s the kicker: my ATD certification played a significant role in making it happen. Employers recognized the value and commitment represented by that certification, giving me a distinct advantage over other candidates. This recognition propelled me into the dynamic landscape of the UAE, laying the groundwork for further career growth.

But how did earning and studying for the ATD certification transform my approach? Throughout this journey, the Talent Development Capability Model served as my guiding compass. Grounded in research and best practices, this framework outlined the essential competencies required for success in talent development. From mastering instructional design essentials to honing project management foundations, the capability model provided me with a roadmap for setting actionable goals and monitoring my progress every step of the way.

Through my studies, I gained a deeper understanding of what it truly means to be a consultant. Now, I’m not just talking about doling out advice from behind a desk—I’m talking about rolling up my sleeves and getting in the trenches with my clients. In December 2023, I achieved another significant milestone by earning the CPTD certification. Through ATD events, online forums, and the MENA study group, I connected with peers from diverse backgrounds and industries, sharing insights, swapping stories, and learning from each other’s experiences.
