Formal mentoring programs are one way that employers may provide training and development opportunities to employees. According to the Center for Creative Leadership, when employees are mentored they benefit in numerous ways because they gain “access to leadership opportunities, career mobility, better rewards and higher compensation, increased adaptability when facing new situations, improved professional identity, greater professional competence, [and] increased career satisfaction.”

ATD last surveyed talent development professionals on their organization’s mentoring programs in 2017. At that time, only 29 percent of responding organizations had a formal mentoring program in place. More recent data from ATD Research, reported in Mentoring for Success: Supporting Growth and Development, found that 48 percent of organizations surveyed had a mentoring program—an increase of 19 percentage points.

Drawing upon a sample of talent development professionals from 295 organizations, the report investigates key questions around mentoring programs to provide benchmarking data and highlight best practices. Here’s an infographic highlighting some critical data points from the study.
