Relationships between industry and higher education started to evolve into partnerships as of the late 1970s, mostly in the research and development area. The movement expanded in an effort to improve the academic and technical skills of the future work force. A study prepared by the American Council on Education (ACE) suggests that globalization of markets, fierce competition, and technological changes have resulted in an increase in higher education and business-industry partnerships.
