Remember when onboarding included one person walking the new hire around the office to introduce them to colleagues? They would say the person's name and role and where their office or cubicle is.
During that interaction, colleagues learned an essential piece of information: the proper way to pronounce the individual's name. With more employees joining teams remotely, that basic yet vital piece of information can get lost.
However, Slack's new audio feature aims to help team members know the right way to say each other's names. Slack users can find the feature located under the "Display Name and Pronoun" sections. There they can create a recording of their name and add text that displays the phonetic pronunciation.
"When co-workers tap a profile and hit play on the recording, they'll learn how to correctly say the entire name—directly from the source," Slack points out.
Pronouncing a name correctly is an important way to make a person feel respected and seen. What's more, Slack hopes that this simple solution can go a long way toward helping organizations foster inclusion and belonging.
