Shane Jacques is a Learning and Development Manager who earned the Certified Professional in Talent Development (CPTD®) credential in 2021.
Why did you pursue the CPTD?
Having joined the profession via a nontraditional route, I wanted to demonstrate the skills I had developed from over more than a decade in the profession. At the same time, I knew that there were segments of the Talent Development Capability Model™ where I had a novice’s understanding. Earning the CPTD credential felt like a great opportunity to prove my worth while also compounding it through upskilling. I wasn't ready to commit to a higher degree, so becoming credentialed felt like a great way to prove and grow my mastery while making myself more marketable within the profession.
How have you benefited from the credential—professionally and/or personally?
Earning the credential has helped me advance professionally. It gave me more marketable skills in my job search and led to landing a new role just a few months after obtaining the certification. I now work in the finance industry with professionals who have certifications and credentials of their own (CPA, CFE, etc.). Because they know the rigor of their own certification processes, having a credential that represents expertise in my field gives me credibility with them. The team that I currently lead also helps our CPAs obtain the continuing education credits needed to keep their licenses current, so having a certification of my own helps me contextualize what they need to recertify.
What advice would you share with others considering certification?
Know how the exam is scored like the back of your hand. Not every question is multiple choice. The case management questions can seem intimidating, but the ATD Certification Institute does a great job demonstrating what they look like through the study guide, handbook, and practice questions. Having a solid understanding of how the exam is formatted will reduce the chance for surprises and let you focus on the material.
How did you get into the talent development field?
My first job out of college gave me the chance to provide leadership and career development training to high school and college students. It was there that I developed an interest in learning design and facilitation. Once I started to dig into the theories that inform workplace learning, I was hooked.

What is the most unusual or interesting job you've ever had?
I led groups of 75 students on short-term study abroad trips to observe farming practices.
